Our Nature’s Academy Flock is growing, and we are excited to announce an update to our staff. Join us in welcoming our newest member, Sarah Sheffer! Originally from the upper peninsula of Michigan, Sarah has been escaping frigid Midwest winters since 2015. She received an Associate’s in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology in 2011. While interning in the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium’s veterinary department, Sarah discovered her fondness for marine life, returned to school, and graduated from Eckerd College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Marine Science in 2018.
During her time at Eckerd, Sarah volunteered with Nature’s Academy for our Coastal Connections program at Fort De Soto. She came home to roost as the Flock’s Education Coordinator following her graduation, leading every aspect of our education team including curriculum development, intern management, and program gear maintenance. Sarah is currently hard at work developing exciting curriculum for STEMing the Tide of Microplastics, our new program for Manatee County’s seventh grade students.
